SALT
This
ancient town was once the capital of Jordan.
A half-hour drive northwest from Amman
transports you back in time to a town
of picturesque streets and dazzling houses
from the late Ottoman period, with their
characteristic long-arched windows. Salt
also houses a small museum and the Handicrafts
School, where you can admire traditional
skills of ceramics, weaving, silk-screen
printing and dyeing.

TO SEE
Salt Archaeological & Folklore
Museum
Salt, tel. (05) 3555653. Hours 08:00-14:00,
closed Fri. The archaeological part of
the museum comprises of artefacts dating
back to as early as the Chalcolithic period
till the Islamic era. The folklore part
comprises of both the Bedouins and modern
Salt traditional costumes, living history
and traditions.

Handicrafts Centre (Noor Al-Hussein)
Salt,
tel. (05) 3551781. A vocational school
for young artisans who receive expert
instruction in weaving and ceramics. The
shop, located in the centre of the old
town of Salt, makes the project self-financing.

of Prophet Shu'ayb (Jethro)
Wadi Shu'ayb Bridge in Salt, 20 minutes
away from Amman
FUHEIS
About
half an hour from Amman, the quaint town
of Fuheis features charming restaurants,
galleries and a small complex of craft
shops presenting ceramics, weaving, jewellery,
antiques and other items. In the summer,
theatre and musical performances can be
enjoyed outdoors - a small detour, but
worth an afternoon or evening trip.
